Module 2 – Qur’an – The Book of Instructions – How To Understand, Reflect & Benefit from The Qur’an

“The Qur’an is unlike any other book. Its arrangement and style are very different. People should keep this in mind when studying the Qur’an. Many people do not know this so they are confused about the Qur’an” – Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

The Qur’an is the most read book in the world but perhaps the least understood. Although the Qur’an is in this world it does not belong to this world. It is the eternal word of Allah, The Most High. It is unlike any other book – its style and arrangement are unique and so is its method of teaching. It is ironic that many people do not realise this. They approach the Qur’an as they would approach any other book and this often leads to confusion and disappointment. The forthcoming groundbreaking seminar deals with this problem and provides the necessary framework for understanding, reflecting and benefiting from the Qur’an in a way that has not been done in the English language before, by one of the foremost scholars of the western world. Module 3 – Exploring the Pearls of The Qur’an – Detailed Study of Al-Fatiha & The Last Ten Surahs – Their Coherence, Meaning & Universal Message

Al Fatiha and the last ten surahs are parts of the Qur’an which would be familiar to us all. Often the first surahs to be memorised and regularly recited in prayers, they are the smallest of surahs in length yet they are vast in their meaning. Al Fatiha is the Mother of the Qur’an and is a pillar of our prayer and among the last ten surahs are those which are likened to a third of the Qur’an . Each surah is perfect and complete in itself, yet it is beautifully connected with the others to form a meaningful and coherent whole. Together they give us pearls of essential knowledge and precious insights into the purpose of our lives. This seminar will explore these surahs of the Qur’an in depth, studying their magnificent words and their amazing coherence and extracting invaluable lessons to apply in our lives today. This seminar will moreover help to uplift and enrich our hearts with the words of Allah, to regain our connection with the Qur’an and to strengthen our prayers, the key to all our other good deeds.

Module 4 – Muqaddimah Tafsīr Niẓām al-Qur’ān – Introduction to Exegesis based on Coherence in the Quran (Maulana Farahi)

Introduction to Exegesis based on Coherence in the Quran
Ḥamīduddīn Farāhī (1279-1348 AH)

Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi (d. 1930) devoted most of his life to study the Qur’an. An erudite scholar, Farahi commanded knowledge of a number of languages, among them Hebrew and English. Among his books are: Mufradat al Quran (Vocabulary of the Quran), Asalib al Quran (Style of the Quran) Jamharat al-Balaghah (Manual of Quranic Rhetoric) and Iman fi Aqsam il Qur’an (Study of the Quranic Oaths). Farahi’s main contribution in the field of Qur’anic studies has been the development of the theory of Niẓām ie thematic unity; every chapter of the Qurʾān has a specific theme around which all elements of the chapter are woven. According to the concept of niẓām, the Qur’an being coherent means that it has an overall theme, each chapter has a theme, and the whole book and every chapter of it are connected in how they present those themes. In other words, niẓām refers to the order of the Qurʾān, and the sequence of its arguments and statements, in relation to the theme of the whole Qurʾān, then to the order of different groups of chapters, then the order of elements within each sūrah in each group. The course will study the theory in detail in the light of the criticism against it.

Module 5 – al-Muqaddimah fī Uṣūl al-Tafsīr – Introduction to the Principles of Exegesis (Ibn Taymiyyah) – Part 1

Introduction to the Principles of Exegesis
Taqī ad-Dīn Aḥmad ibn Taymiyyah (661-728 AH)

This is a brief but comprehensive work on the principles of Tafsir. The main point and the emphasis in this book by Imam ibn Taymiyyah is that anyone who studies the Qur’an should always keep in mind who the speaker is and who it is spoken to. He emphasizes that we should keep in mind that it is Allah who is speaking and the one who has been chosen to receive this speech is Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam. Therefore it is the Messenger Muhammad sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam who would have understood this message better than anyone else, and that it necessitates we should keep his life and the sunnah is mind to understand the Qur’an – to see how the Prophet sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam received the message and how he acted upon it and also how the first students of the Prophet – his companions – understood and acted upon the message, and that this must be the most authentic understanding of the Qur’an. No doubt this is a very important work with strong arguments. The course will provide a detailed study of his work and compare it with other works of usul al-tafsir.
