Diploma in Advanced Qur’anic Tafsir Studies – Surah Al-Nur

SurahNoor_ExactFit1

Overview

Diploma in Advanced Qur’anic Tafsir Studies  explores Surah Al-Nur from The Qur’an. Surah Al-Nur is a Madani surah based upon the false accusations made against one of the righteous mothers of Islam, Aisha (ra).

The surah uses the virtues of Aisha (ra) to demonstrate the necessity of upholding the rights and dignity of God fearing men and women. We live in a society whereby adultery, fornication and immodesty have become prevalent. Such actions disintegrate families and create fragmented societies, leaving individuals in a state of loss and despair.

As our Creator, Allah (swt) knows our faults and weaknesses. This surah acknowledges our weaknesses and provides clear guidance on how one can contribute positively towards building a flourishing society. The solutions provided not only promote unity and brotherhood, but also self-development. Through the primary themes of righteousness and morality, we are able to develop ourselves spiritually and give back to our families, community and society in ways we could never imagine.

Following topics will be discussed in detail
  • Punishment of adultery.
  • The false rumours against Aisha (ra)
  • Accusations upon pious chaste women.
  • Rulings on entering others homes, proper dress.
  • The struggle between light and darkness (righteousness and deception).
  • The glory of Allah (swt).
  • Obedience to Allah (swt) and His messenger (saw).
  • Rules of privacy for men and women.

“We have sent down verses to you {people} clarifying the right path, examples of those who passed away before you, and teaching for those who are mindful of God” (Quran 24:34).

Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi will be teaching all the classes of this programme.

Why study tafsir with – Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi ?

“Shaykh’s Tafsir is unique because he presents the text as a practical guidance which is applicable to day to day life. He helps understand how the teachings remain relevant and how they can be applied in today’s day and age. This is something that is difficult otherwise, if one tries to just read Tafsir from books. His teaching is like that of a life coach’s teaching which is aimed at bringing transformational change in the lives of the listeners.

He focuses mainly on the teachings which bring us closer to Allah and less on the appreciation of the text. As he himself likes to say, Quran is a ‘Book of instructions’ not a ‘Book of appreciation’.

Shaykh is an excellent teacher. His use of simple stories to get his point across is excellent and very effective in softening the heart. So is his use of poetic couplets every now and then, which keeps one alert and fresh. I find this a proper method of teaching Quran, contrary to the style of popular preachers of today who give in to frequent and needless jokes for entertainment.

He doesn’t just read out 10 different tafaseer of different mufasireen as is the case with most scholars out there. This can give the wrong impression that the Quran is a book with hidden meanings. Due to his strength in Hadith, quranic Arabic and scholarly knowledge Shaykh is able to give that one interpretation of the text which is most accurate. His strength in Hadith enables him to come up with the most authentic interpretation of the Ayaat in the light of prophetic guidance. One can begin to see how the scholars are the inheritors of the prophets.

Quite often, mufasireen can focus too much on a weak Hadith and as a result come up with a very different interpretation. This is the reason why I find Shaykh’s Tafsir more trustworthy.

I am also impressed by the fact that he has the courage to choose a rational explanation of an Ayah over a more popular version which could have been around for years and previously taught by numerous scholars.”

I highly recommend this course to my brothers and sisters

We find ourselves seeking shelter in a corner amid the chaos, confusion, -isms, and the overwhelming force of social winds weakening the clutches of Muslims desperately trying to “hold fast to the rope of Allah” – even our learned men and scholars are not spared from being tainted, consumed, or affected.  There have been days when I have sunk into a corner of depression and dismay, but as Muslims I know that we do not despair of the Help and Mercy of Allah.  I stumbled onto this course on the Essential Islamic Sciences in my spam email one day, and decided to enroll in the hope of gaining some sanity and sakinah in my deen.  This is not simply another “course” to be done to accumulate a database of knowledge or to gain “credentials” – it is essential for the average Muslim struggling to walk the Straight Path amidst the winds of change that surround us.  A wake up call for the soul – like a cold shower that wakes us from the sedative effects of drugs that threaten to slowly numb and kill the soul.  This course with Dr. Akram Nadwi is a means to truly understand our place in this life and the space we occupy, and above all, a means of re-connecting with Allah (swt).  Each time I listen to a lecture, I am better able to grasp what my deen means and should mean to me, and as such, I feel I take a step closer to Allah (swt).  In the spirit of wanting for my brother what I desire for myself, I highly recommend this course to my brothers and sisters.  Stop wasting time on social media when it can be spent immersing ourselves in our deen beyond a few bytes and memes.
